Body camera video shows Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Officer William Eng sprint up the stairs to a third-floor apartment to find a mother holding her unresponsive daughter.

SAVANNAH, Georgia -- The video shows a mother’s nightmare.

An baby girl wrapped in a pink blanket is unresponsive. She isn’t breathing, a relative says in a call to 911.

“Please send someone quick!” the caller says.

At 8:30 p.m. Friday when the call went out, Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department Officer William Eng knew he was the closest officer on duty. His bodycam video shows him sprinting up the stairs to the third-floor apartment at the Montgomery Landing Apartments on West 57th Street.

At the top of the stairs, he finds a mother holding her unresponsive 29-day-old daughter, Bella.

On the landing outside the apartment, Eng begins compressions on the infant’s back as her mother falls to her knees. After about a minute of compressions, the baby begins breathing.

“Officer Eng did not hesitate to jump into action. Because of his compassionate and quick response, he saved the life of this little girl,” said Sgt. Phillip Collard in a SCMPD news release.

The police department’s Facebook page was full of well-wishes for Eng after the bodycam video was posted online. In a few hours, the video had garnered more than 500 reactions and 41 shares.

“So glad this story had a happy ending! Great job Officer! It’s great to see some positive news stories for once!” one woman posted.

“This was so hard to watch — I had to keep reminding myself there was a happy ending coming. Bless you, Officer Eng and Baby Bella. So glad she's okay!” posted another.
