Bulletproof Vest Saves Chicago Police Officer Shot in Chest

A Chicago police officer and two men were shot early Sunday in the Morgan Park neighborhood after officers responded to a disturbance call, according to the Police Department. A second police officer shot the alleged offender and “inadvertently” also shot an 18-year-old man.

At around 12:54 a.m., officers responded to an altercation between a 35-year-old and an 18-year-old at the 11400 block of South Davol Street. While officers attempted to separate the two men, the 35-year-old’s gun went off, shooting both the 18-year-old and an officer.

The officer was shot in the chest and saved by a protective vest, according to police.

A second officer, returning fire, shot the alleged offender and “inadvertently” shot the 18-year-old, according to police.

The 18-year-old was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center and the 35-year-old was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in fair condition. The officer who was shot was taken to another hospital and was discharged.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting with cooperation from the Chicago Police Department. COPA asked for anyone with information on the incident to call its office, according to an X post.

The CPD’s investigative response team is also investigating. The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days.
