What to know

  • The Hawaiʻi Police Department will begin testing new external ballistic vest uniforms with 10 patrol officers starting May 1 as part of a 30‑day evaluation program.
  • The department will assess comfort, mobility and durability of the vests, with particular focus on performance in the area's climate and day‑to‑day patrol conditions.
  • In addition to officer feedback, the agency is seeking public input on the uniforms’ appearance and professionalism to inform future adoption decisions.

Nearly a dozen officers at a Hawaii police department will be testing new external ballistic vest uniform starting next month.

The 10 Hawai'i Police Department officers chosen for the testing program will wear the new vests while on patrol for 30 days, according to an agency news release. The testing is scheduled to run from May 1-31, but it could extend for 30 more days if more data is needed.

“This evaluation is part of Chief (Reed K.) Mahuna’s ongoing commitment to provide our officers with the best possible equipment to enhance both their safety and effectiveness while serving the public,” said Capt. Levon Stevens in a statement.

As part of the testing, the department will be examining the comfort, mobility and durability of the new uniform, especially when it comes to working in the area's climate. Officers will be issued and trained on the new gear on Tuesday.

Along with officers' input, the department also wants feedback from the public. Community members are encouraged to tell the agency how they feel about the uniform's appearance and professionalism, as well as any other observations.
