JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri -- A Jefferson City police officer was saved by his ballistic vest after being shot in chest during a foot pursuit Wednesday night.

The incident began when officers investigating a weapons offense observed a vehicle wanted in connection to multiple previous shot fired incidents and attempted a traffic stop around 10:20 p.m., according to a news release.

A pursuit began near West McCarty and Hughes and traveled throughout the city. Once the vehicle reached the area of East Atchison and Jackson Streets, the two suspects exited and fled on foot.

The pursuing officers followed the suspects into a wooded area and a struggle with one of suspects began. During the struggle, the suspect produced a concealed handgun and fired on the officers. One of the officers was struck in the chest by gunfire and the second officer returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect.

The second suspect hid in the wooded area and a perimeter was created as additional officers, including a K-9 team, responded to the area. With the assistance of a Missouri State Highway Patrol helicopter, the second suspect was taken into custody.

The injured officer was transported to a local hospital and was listed in stable condition.
