A Memphis police officer was saved by his bulletproof vest and three people were charged in his shooting Wednesday night.
The officer was serving a drug warrant with the organized crime unit at an apartment on Eastwind Drive in the Whitehaven neighborhood when officials say Dannis Murphy opened fire from inside a unit, hitting the officer in his chest, according to WATN-TV.
Police charged Murphy with attempted murder while Alan Sullivan and Gwendolyn Gordon were charged as accessories.
The officer, a 7-year veteran of the force, did not sustain serious injuries thanks to his vest and is out of the hospital and expected to be OK.
Deputy Police Director Anthony Berryhill said that the outcome could have been dire if the officer was not wearing body armor.
"It was a center shot," he told the news station. "Without it, we'd hate to think what could have happened had he not had it on."
Following a barricade situation at the apartment complex, police said the three suspects surrendered and were arrested.
