Why do we cover Police Week?

July 23, 2015

Law enforcement Technology is your (dare we say favorite?) police trends magazine … with a spin. See, we’re tirelessly sniffing out the new product and tech solutions for you to learn about and consider. We love trying to picture what gear will be indispensable to officers on the streets 1, 5 … 10 years into the future. This is where you’ll find subject matter experts and North American LE pros bantering about how innovations like cloud data storage and smartphone apps will impact operation costs and quality of service. Be that as it may, we would be making a fatal mistake if we ever forgot about the body behind the body camera or the eyes looking out of the Google Glass. Because without you guys, any new technology is useless. It takes intelligence, courage and innovation to really be effective on patrol. Only empathetic and well-trained humans can earn trust and carry out a pledge to keep entire communities safe.

Police Week—the week where our nation formally honors law enforcement men and women killed in the line of duty—takes place every year in May at our nation’s capital. We like to cover it in July to remember the courage and service of the patriotic men and women who serve and are honored for their service. At press time, our Officer.com page ‘Honoring the Fallen’ section lists far too many men and women: Kentucky State Police Trooper Eric k. Chrisman. Chehalis (Washington) Police Officer Rick Silva. New Orleans Officer Daryle Holloway. Cincinnati Police Officer Sonny Kim. Montgomery Co. (Georgia) Sheriff Ladson O’Connor. Omaha (Nebraska) Police Officer Kerrie Orozco. Edmonton (Canada) Police Constable Daniel Woodall. And the list goes on … We salute you.

In this month’s issue you can read a first-hand account of Officer Chris Backhaus’ ride with the Chapter 8 Unity Tour to D.C. Head over to Officer.com to continue reading Backhaus’ experiences from this year’s tour. Who knows? It might inspire you to dust off the bike and start training in preparation for next year’s ride! And while you’re there, be sure to check out other pics captured at the riders’ final destination in Judiciary Square. www.officer.com/media_gallery/12074106  If you’ve never been (as either rider, family member, tourist or participant) … it’s definitely a pilgrimage worth making and something you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

Hope you had a safe and happy Fourth!
