AI Helping 911 Dispatchers
Dispatchers are the lifeline for police, relaying vital information to officers when they respond to calls. But like most positions in law enforcement, heavy workloads and staffing struggles are taking their toll on dispatchers.
That's why some departments are turning to artificial intelligence to provide relief to those answering 911 calls. Managing Editor Paul Peluso talked to two companies—Axon and Motorola Solutions—offering AI tools for language translation and non-emergency call handling. This is how Michael Chime, who leads Axon 911, talks about the tech:
"In this world, non-emergency wait times literally drop to zero. … Dispatchers can stay focused on what matters, and agencies that are facing short staffing can offload more than a third of their call volume without a single additional headcount."
