What to Know
- Pierce County prosecutors declined to file charges against either driver involved in the Dec. 19, 2025, death of Washington State Patrol Trooper Tara-Marysa Guting, citing insufficient evidence of criminal negligence or knowing involvement in a fatal hit-and-run.
- Investigators determined poor visibility, rain, darkness and roadway conditions made it difficult for drivers to see Guting, who was struck by one vehicle while investigating a crash and then struck again while lying in a traffic lane.
- Prosecutors also said they could not prove the second driver knew he had hit a person, and the medical examiner could not determine which collision ultimately caused Guting’s fatal injuries.
