Memphis Police Officer Joseph McKinney was shot and killed on April 12 in a shootout that left an 18-year-old suspect dead and the 17-year-old suspect critically injured.

MEMPHIS, Tennessee -- The Office of Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy revealed this week that current information indicates that Memphis Police Officer Joseph McKinney was killed by friendly fire.

According to a statement released by the DA's office, which followed a motion to transfer the 17-year-old suspect to adult court, stated that a murder charge was not filed due to the information.

"Although current information indicates friendly fire, we believe the 17-year-old’s reprehensible actions are still the real cause of Officer McKinney’s death," the statement reads. "Should a legal avenue open up for additional prosecution, be assured we will pursue it. This is an ongoing TBI investigation."

McKinney was shot and killed on April 12 in a shootout that left an 18-year-old suspect dead and the 17-year-old suspect critically injured.

The teen has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault against a first responder and aggravated assault in connection to the shootout. He is also charged with theft of property $10,000-$60,000, possessing a firearm during the commission or attempt to commit a dangerous felony, possession of a prohibited weapon and evading arrest.

Following the information released by the DA's office, the Memphis Police Department sent out a statement that reads: "We continue to mourn the death of Officer Joseph McKinney, as we learn this new information. The facts remain that our officers responded to a very violent encounter that tragically resulted in Officer McKinney being fatally shot. We continue to support Officer McKinney's family and the Memphis Police Department in honor of his valor. Please continue to pray for the family and all involved."
