The man who struck and killed a New York State Police trooper in 2014 was sentenced in life in prison without patrol on Thursday.
Joseph Cawley announced his ruling for Almond Upton, who ran over and killed Trooper Christopher Skinner on Interstate 81 north of Chenango in 2014, according to The Press & Sun Bulliten.
Upton was driving more than 90 miles per hour and hit two other vehicles moments before his pickup truck crashed into and killed the 42-year-old trooper on May 29, 2014.
Cawley said he believed Upton targeted Skinner simply because he was a state trooper and tha it was "nothing less than an assassination."
Upton apologized for his actions in court and said that he wished to express his "deepest sorrow" to Skinner's family.
