Violent crime went up in 2015 while property crime went down, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Reporting Program, which released its yearly report on Monday.
The FBI report shows that violent crime rose 3.9 percent while property crime dropped 2.6 percent compared to 2014.
The UCR revealed that there were an estimated 1,197,704 violent crimes committed around the nation. This includes an estimated 15,696 murders, 90,185 rapes and 327,374 robberies nationwide.
Firearms were used in 71.5 percent of the recorded murders, 40.8 percent of robberies and 24.2 percent of aggravated assaults.
The report found that property crimes resulted in estimated losses of $14.3 billion in 2015. The total value of reported stolen property was $12,420,364,454.
FBI Director James Comey said in a statement that the agency also is working to improve the collection, analysis and use of crime statistics and data about law enforcement's use of force through both the National Incident-Based Reporting System and a use-of-force database.
"(Both will) give us a more complete, richer picture of crime in our communities, and a national and detailed picture of the ways we in law enforcement are using force," Comey said. "Information that is accurate, reliable, complete, and timely will help all of us learn where we have problems and how to get better."
