Prince George's County police on Wednesday identified the officer who mistakenly killed a colleague he mistook for a suspect during an ambush outside a police station last month.

Officer Taylor Krauss fired the shot that fatally wounded Officer Jacai Colson, who was working undercover and was not in uniform, outside the District III station on March 13, according to WTTG-TV.

"I spoke directly to Taylor and his wife today. They're doing well," Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski told reporters. "They've had an opportunity to prepare themselves for this information coming into the public space."

Stawinski said that while Krauss deliberately fired the shot, he did not realize that Colson was part of the police force.

The hearing was held on the same day for Michael, Malik and Elijah Ford, who are all charged in connection to the "unprovoked" ambush that led to the death of 28-year-old Colson.

A judge found probable cause to charge the three brothers with second-degree murder for their roles in the ambush.

Officials said that Krauss remains on leave and will return back to work when he is ready.
