WOODBRIDGE, Virginia -- As thousands were honoring a fallen Prince William County police officer Tuesday, a bank robbery took place just three miles away from the funeral.
Officials said that the bank robber walked into a BB&T branch at 12435 Dillingham Square around 11:30 a.m. as the funeral for Officer Ashley Guindon was about to take place at the Hylton Memorial Chapel in Woodbridge, according to The Woodbridge Patch.
The 28-year-old rookie officer, who was killed on first day on the job, was one of three Prince William County police officers wounded during a shootout with Ronald Williams Hamilton on Feb. 27.
Virginia State Police troopers and Manassas City police officers were handling calls for the department during the funeral and responded to the robbery.
Manassas City Police spokesperson Adrienne Helms said that the bank robber reportedly jumped the counter at the branch while pointing a knife at the teller and demanding cash.
The man then fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash in a white grocery bag and headed into the woods on Old Bridge Road.
Police described the suspect as a black male, between 17 and 18 years old, 5'11". The suspect had "metal in his mouth" and was wearing a shoulder-length red wig, a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and light gray tennis shoes.
The robbery is currently under investigation.
