An investigation into the death of a Vermont State trooper who collapsed at a gun range last week has been launched.

An autopsy found that Trooper Kyle Young died Thursday from exertional heatstroke while participating in tryouts for the Vermont State Police Tactical Services Unit at the Ethan Allen Firing Range in Jericho, according to WPTZ-TV.

Young was transported to UVM Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The 28-year-old's death has been ruled an accident. The medical examiner determined the trooper died from strenuous physical activity during high temperatures, which reached 86 degrees. According to the medical examiner, Young died within minutes of collapsing.

Vermont State Police Commissioner Keith Flynn said an investigation into Young's death has been ordered.

"In consultation with the Governor, I have ordered a complete administrative review of the application processes and testing requirements for all Vermont State Police Special Purpose Teams while we await the final report and a complete understanding of what happened," Flynn said in a statement. "Our thoughts continue to be with Trooper Young and his family."

Young graduated from the police academy in January and was an Afghanistan-Iraqi War veteran.

His body was taken Saturday from Burlington to his hometown of Watertown. He is survived by his children, a partner, parents and other family members.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Cummings Funeral Service on Sterling Street in Watertown.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church on West Main Street in Brownville.

A GoFundMe page established to benefit Young's family has already raised more than $10,000.
