The Kootenai County, Idaho prosecutor has ruled that a September 2012 fatal shooting involving Coeur d'Alene police officers was justified.
County Prosecutor Barry McHugh's office released the documents on Friday following an investigation into the shooting, according to The Coeur d'Alene Press.
"Mr. Buquet posed an immediate and continuing danger to the lives of anyone who he may have come into contact with," McHugh wrote. "There was absolutely no indication at that time that he intended to stop his continuing violent conduct or surrender to officers when they fired to stop him."
The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office released a 75-page summary of its own investigation, as well as several video clips taken from body-worn and dashboard cameras.
Coeur d'Alene police officers responded to a shots fired call around 11 a.m. on Sept. 29, 2012, in the area of 12th Street and Lakeside Avenue after dispatch informed them that Buquet had shot a man in the chest.
The suspect fled the scene in a 2004 Ford Focus and then fired a semi-automatic pistol at three bystanders, according to the report.
Multiple officers pursued the teen, and when he turned the corner at Sunnyside Road, he began firing his gun at the pursuing officers. The chase ended when Buquet vehicle slid and struck a barrier cable before it stopped.
Four officers then fired approximately 77 rounds into the vehicle, killing him.
McHugh commended the Coeur d'Alene Police officers involved in the incident for their "handling of a very unusual and dangerous situation in a manner that resulted in no injuries to innocent bystanders."
