Columbus police SWAT officers shot and killed a man early this morning who was suspected of injuring his girlfriend in a shooting on the South Side last night.

The fatal shooting occurred just after midnight at 719 S. 17th St., police said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, not far from Nationwide Children's Hospital, at 12:14 a.m. His name has not been released.

That shooting followed another shooting about 9 p.m. yesterday, when a woman was shot inside a house at 1196 Lockbourne Rd. on the South Side.

The 50-year-old woman, whose name also was not released, was taken in critical condition to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center. By early this morning, the woman had stabilized and was expected to survive, police said.

Police found the woman, who was shot in the face, after a 911 caller told a dispatcher that her daughter had been shot by her boyfriend.

SWAT officers were looking in the South Side neighborhood for the man. Dispatchers received a call at 11:07 p.m. that the suspect had been sighted in the 600 block of Southwood Avenue. Police tracked him to the home on S. 17th Street.
