Boston Police Officer Shot; Suspect Killed

Officials said the police officer was hospitalized with a "through and through" gunshot wound to his arm.

A Boston police officer was wounded and a suspect was killed during a shootout Saturday afternoon.

Two officers were speaking to two men around 1:05 p.m. in the Dorchester neighborhood when one of the men pushed one of the officers before opening fire, according to The Boston Herald.

Police said the gunman continued to shoot as he fled and that officers chasing him returned fire, killing him.

"When you have a situation of deadly force and they’re trying to kill us, we have no other choice unfortunately," acting Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said at a press conference. "That’s what we're trained for. If someone opens fire on us, we have obviously every right to fire back."

One officer was hospitalized at Boston Medical Center with a "through and through" wound to the arm, while the second officer went to the hospital to be treated for stress.

The second man the officers were speaking to is in custody.
