A manhunt is underway for a gunman who wounded a Delaware State Trooper in Wilmington Wednesday afternoon.
Trooper Richard Deskis is recovering at home after he was shot in the arm around 4 p.m. at 24th and Market Streets, according to WPVI-TV.
The 17-year veteran assigned to the Delaware State Police Troop 1 Retail Theft Unit was assisting Wilmington police in investigating a parked black Dodge sedan that appeared to contain stolen merchandise.
Witnesses told the news station that the trooper was interviewing a woman when gunshot were fired.
The 44-year-old trooper was struck in the right arm and officers were able to shield him while they administered first aid until EMS personnel arrived and transported him to Christiana Hospital.
Deskis was treated and released at 7:30 p.m. The trooper, his wife and family members were escorted home by Delaware State Police.
One man was taken into custody and interviewed, but was later released.
"We are following some leads. We have talked to several individuals, but we have not charged anyone at this time," Delaware State Police Sgt. Paul Shavack told the news station. "We're conducting interviews at the scene in order to progress this investigation."
