Police continue to investigate this morning after at least seven people were wounded in shootings in Chicago Wednesday evening, including three men shot to death and a 6-year-old boy who suffered three gunshot wounds to the shoulder and chest, authorities said.
Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said no arrests have been made this morning in the child's shooting.
The boy was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital from near 57th Street and Mozart Avenue in the Gage Park neighborhood, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder about 5:37 p.m., said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien. The boy, believed to be 6, suffered three gunshot wounds to the shoulder and chest and was in critical condition, police said this evening.
The shooting happened after a man who was in a car in the 5600 block of South Mozart with the boy got into a dispute with two other men or boys, O'Brien said. The two men or boys started throwing bottles at the car, and the man started to drive off and heard shots, then realized the boy had been shot and called 911, O'Brien said.
Family told WGN-TV at Mount Sinai Hospital that the boy, age 6, and his 7-year-old brother were picked up from a regular tutoring session at a family friend's house by their 19-year-old brother when the back window of the grey sedan they were in was shot out. The older brother drove to 56th Street and Sacramento Avenue, where he stopped and called police.
The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the chest that went through his lung, his mother told WGN-TV through an interpreter. The boy was improving this evening but was in terrible pain, she told WGN.
About 6:20 p.m., four men were shot and a fifth wounded by glass in the 7300 block of South Laflin Street in the Englewood neighborhood, with one person dead on the scene, O'Brien said. One 28-year-old man was dead on the scene and another man the same age died later at Advocate Christ Medical Center, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
None of those shot were known to have gang affiliations, police said.
A 27-year-old man shot in the shoulder was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital and a 27-year-old man shot in the buttocks was taken to Christ, Zala said.
A fifth man, 23, was wounded by broken glass and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition, said Greer.
Four of the victims were sitting in a Chevrolet SUV and a fifth was standing outside, talking to those in the car when two gunmen ran toward them from a 74th Street and opened fire on the SUV before fleeing the scene, police said. The gunmen then fled on foot, police said.
Greer said no arrests have been made as of early Thursday morning.
Earlier, a 20-year-old man was critically injured after being shot in the Gresham neighborhood, police said.
The shooting happened at 4:30 p.m. on the 8700 block of South Loomis Avenue, said Chicago police news affairs officer Veejay Zala.
Police said the man was on his way to his grandmother's home when he was shot.
Two gunmen emerged from a gangway and shot the victim, before fleeing back through the gangway, police said, citing preliminary witness information.
The man was shot in the abdomen and neck and was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Zala said. The man was pronounced dead at Christ Medical Center at 5:25 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
About the same time the boy was shot, a 23-year-old man was wounded in the buttocks in the 600 block of North Avers Avenue in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, O'Brien said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, and while an exact condition was not available for him, his condition had been stabilized.
