A police encounter that resulted in shots being fired on the Iowa State University campus Monday morning began with an attempted traffic stop nearby, according to Iowa State police.

Ames officers tried to make a traffic stop on a vehicle, but the driver instead led police on a pursuit that entered the ISU central campus, according to an Iowa State police Facebook post.

The suspect vehicle rammed multiple police cars, and an Ames officer fired on the vehicle, according to the Facebook update.

The driver was taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center, and ISU police say there is no longer a threat to the campus community.

ISU released a brief statement saying that the "situation resulted from a vehicle chase by Ames Police" and that the danger had passed.

Officers are asking people to avoid the area that is cordoned off and to follow officer instructions. They also are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to call police at 515-239-5133.
