VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- An off-duty Portsmouth police officer shot and killed a man Saturday during a bank robbery in the 5000 block of Ferrell Parkway, according to a City of Virginia Beach news release.

The incident occurred after 10 a.m. Saturday at Chartway Federal Credit Union when a man wearing a mask, dark clothing and gloves entered the financial institution brandished what appeared to be a gun at tellers and announced a robbery, the news release said.

An armed off-duty Portsmouth police officer who was conducting business in the bank confronted the assailant, and when the man began to turn toward the officer he shot him, the news release said. The assailant was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are withholding the victim's identification until his relatives are notified.

There were no other injuries in the robbery, the release said.

The Virginia Beach Police Department's Investigative Division and the Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney Office are conducting investigations into the incident, which is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings, the news release said. The Portsmouth Police Department's Office of Internal Affairs will be conducting an administrative investigation, the release said.
