Iowa Prison Escapee Fatally Shot by Homeowner

Aug. 20, 2013
Rodney Eugene Long, a prison escapee who allegedly shot a deputy, was killed by a homeowner.

An Iowa man, who along with his wife was being held hostage by an escaped inmate, fatally shot the man who allegedly shot a sheriff's deputy over the weekend.

Jerome and Carolyn Mauderly were asleep in their Bedford home Monday night when Rodney Eugene Long broke into their home, according to The Des Moines Register.

Long, who police say shot a Taylor County Deputy Dan Wyckoff Sunday night, used the couple's cell phone and disabled the phone lines after breaking into the home around 10:15 p.m.

The convict, who escaped from the Clarinda Correctional Facility on Friday, was gathering supplies in order to continue his run from authorities.

Meanwhile, the Mauderlys were still in their bedroom and decided after four hours to do something. Somehow, Jerome was able to get a hold of his shotgun and his wife called law enforcement shortly after 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Police say Jerome fatally shot Long in the kitchen of the home and authorities found him face-down on the floor with a single wound.

Wyckoff remained in an Omaha hospital in stable condition Monday night with non-life-threatening injuries.
