An off-duty deputy and a suspect were injured in a shooting during a drug bust at an apartment complex in the 3400 block of Fredericksburg Road early Sunday.

The incident happened about 2:40 a.m. as two deputies searched the Fredericksburg Place apartments for a suspect, 21-year-old Rudy Gonzalez, who was wanted on a felony warrant for a parole violation, a spokesman for the Bexar County Sheriff's Office said.

After witnessing a drug transaction in the parking lot, the deputies pulled their vehicle behind Gonzalez's vehicle. An off-duty deputy, Gus Trevino, who was working security for the apartments, came to assist the other officers.

As deputies approached Gonzalez, he tried to ram them with his vehicle, the spokesman said. A deputy opened fire at Gonzalez, striking him once in the shoulder. Trevino reported that he had been struck in the face, but investigators determined he was hit by a fragment or ricochet bullet and was not in the line of fire.

Gonzalez was transported to University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Trevino was transported to the same hospital in serious but stable condition.

Authorities said narcotics were found in the suspect's vehicle. Gonzalez will be charged with aggravated assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon and possession of a controlled substance, the sheriff's office said.
