Authorities in Murray County evacuated a residence and were decontaminated at a local hospital after they discovered a cloud of smoke and a contraption that turned out to be an active meth lab.
Three sheriff's office deputies responded to a residence at 4286 Ga. Highway 225 N. on Monday around noon after officers from State Probation requested help in serving a probation arrest warrant on Michael Ray Dean, according to a press release from the sheriff's office.
During a "safety sweep" of the residence after they arrested Dean, they discovered a cloud of smoke and a plastic bottle with a hose connected that they determined to be part of a "shake-n-bake" meth lab. Officials evacuated the house and called in narcotics investigators who went in wearing chemical suits and breathing apparatuses. They found "a small quantity of meth," according to the release, as well as items and utensils used to make the drug.
Dean, 38, of the residence, was charged by the sheriff's office with manufacturing meth, manufacturing meth within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of meth and possession of tools for the commission of crime.
A woman there, Kayla Ruth Hicks, 30, of 412 Treadwell, Apartment 114, Chatsworth, was charged with giving a false name and date of birth to a law enforcement officer.
