RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. -- San Bernardino County sheriff's detectives have made an arrest in the slaying of Joseph Anthony Anguiano 17 years ago.
Gabriel Ralph Bencomo, 35, of Rancho Cucamonga was apprehended in Riverside Thursday in connection to Anguiano's murder.
In the early morning hours on Aug. 4, 1996, Anguiano was shot in the front yard of his home in the 8800 block of Hermosa Avenue. He was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center where he later died.
Detectives followed numerous leads at the time of the killing, but it remained unsolved.
In 2010, sheriff's cold case detectives reopened the case, taking another look into the evidence collected in 1996.
Through DNA evidence, deputies were able to identify Bencomo as a suspect in the slaying, according to the Sheriff's Department.
Bencomo was booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on suspicion of murder and is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
In November, Bencomo was convicted of battery of a former spouse and in 2008 he was convicted on charges of fighting in public, according to court records.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detectives Jerry Davenport or Ryan Ford at 909-387-3589.
