A Wauwatosa man accused of opening fire Sunday at Potawatomi Bingo Casino and wounding a Milwaukee woman in her leg could be referred to the Milwaukee County district attorney's office for charges as early as Monday.
The 27-year-old man allegedly fired a handgun and wounded a 23-year-old Milwaukee woman about 1:30 a.m. Sunday at the casino at 1721 W. Canal St., sending gamblers fleeing.
Some patrons reportedly helped wrestle the gun away from the man, who already had fired multiple shots on the casino's gaming floor, but police have not confirmed that account.
Multiple people told the Journal Sentinel that frightened patrons stampeded in two waves toward the casino's exits in a chaotic scene as other gamblers sought cover under gaming tables.
The casino has since reopened. The woman was taken to a local hospital and her injuries are not life-threatening, police said.
"We are thankful no one was hurt more seriously and that the situation was contained quickly," the casino said in a written statement.
"Response by local law enforcement as well as our security team was outstanding. Potawatomi Bingo Casino will continue to cooperate and assist throughout investigation into this extremely isolated event."
