A state trooper shot and killed a 41-year-old New Bedford man during "an altercation on the roadway" in Quincy Friday morning, police said.
The suspect was shot about 8:15 a.m. and was transported to Milton Hospital, where he was confirmed deceased about 9 a.m., state police spokesman David Procopio said.
The trooper was not injured. The shooting happened on Route 28, Procopio said.
State Police Col. Timothy Alban said the encounter was sparked when a motorist called the Milton barracks to report a car operating erratically. He said state police responded, based on that information, to what they believed was a medical emergency.
When a trooper located the car, Alban said, a violent confrontation ensued and the trooper shot the suspect.
Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrisey said there are numerous witnesses to the confrontation and they are being interviewed by police.
The trooper's weapon was taken as evidence and he will be placed on administrative leave pending a review of the shooting by state police and the Norfolk District Attorney's office, Alban said.
The suspect was the second person this week shot by police. Wednesday night a trooper and Boston police opened fire on 53-year-old Kenneth Connolly of South Boston, who a caller said was carrying firearms. Police did recover a pellet gun from Connolly, who allegedly attempted to shoot at police.
Connolly was hospitalized at Boston Medical Center and will be arraigned when doctors determine he has recovered.
