COLUMBIA, S.C. -- A team of U.S. marshals, acting on a CrimeStoppers tip, seized a fugitive wanted in connection with last month's shooting death of a 14-year-old girl on a New York City bus.
Kevin McClinton, 21, was arrested without incident around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Riverland Park neighborhood of Cayce, a Lexington County town across the Congaree River from Columbia.
Later Tuesday, McClinton waived extradition in a Lexington County courtroom and was in the process of being transferred to back to New York.
The marshals acted on a fugitive warrant issued out of New York, said U.S. deputy marshal Amanda Lyons of South Carolina.
New York City police allege that McClinton killed D'Aja Robinson as she was riding a Queens bus in May. Thousands mourned her death.
New York City newspapers reported that McClinton was trying to kill another teenaged girl when his shots went wild and Robinson was killed with a stray bullet to her head. In the melee, McClinton fired at least nine rounds.
The shooting was allegedly related to gang activity, and the girl McClinton was aiming at had supposedly made derogatory statements about McClinton's gang, according to press accounts.
McClinton was born in South Carolina but had lived in New York City for some years.
New York City police were involved in McClinton's arrest Tuesday morning.
