The manhunt continued Wednesday morning for a suspect who allegedly shot a Sioux City police officer in the face during a traffic stop.
Officer Kevin McCormick had a bullet surgically removed from his forehead and was released from a local hospital on Tuesday, according to The Sioux City Journal.
Authorities are currently seeking 21-year-old Jamal Dean in the shooting.
The incident began on Monday around 3 p.m. after McCormick -- who joined the force last year -- pulled over a vehicle in an alley in the 1300 block of West Fourth Street because a female passenger was not wearing a seat belt.
As the officer exited his cruiser, Dean -- who was riding in the vehicle that was also carrying three children -- opened fire before fleeing the scene with a gun, which was in a garbage can a few blocks away, police said.
McCormick was able to stay calm and describe the suspect over the radio after he was shot.
"I can't believe I'm talking to you guys right now because I've got a bullet in my forehead,” he told dispatch.
Officials said that Dean is a known gang member who served time in prison for a weapons charge and is suspected in several area shootings.
Several local, state and federal agencies have joined in the hunt for Dean.
