A Sioux City police officer who was shot in the face during a traffic stop Monday is expected to recover and a manhunt is on for the suspect.
Officer Kevin McCormick was struck by a bullet in his forehead above the right eye during the incident in the 1300 block of West Fourth Street around 3 p.m., according to The Sioux City Journal.
Officials said that McCormick was able to stay calm and describe the suspect over the radio after he was shot.
The incident began after the officer -- who joined the force last year -- pulled over a vehicle because a female passenger was not wearing a seat belt.
Police Chief Doug Young told reporters that as McCormick exited his cruiser, 22-year-old Jamal Dean -- who was riding in the vehicle that was also carrying three children -- opened fire.
Dean was last seen fleeing southwest in a residential area carrying a rifle.
Neighboring schools were put into lockdown as the search began and schools continued to take extra precautions on Tuesday as the search continued.
The department has received tips on the whereabouts of the man and is currently investigating all leads.
