POMPANO BEACH -- A townhome resident shot and killed an armed man who was outside his garage when he arrived home before dawn Tuesday, officials said.

The incident happened about 5:15 a.m. at Conch Key Villas along the 400 block of Northeast First Street, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The resident told investigators he came home and saw an armed man near his garage, said Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Dani Moschella.

At some point, the two men began struggling. The resident told detectives he wrestled away the man's gun and shot him with it, Moschella said.

The resident is cooperating with investigators, she said.

He told authorities that during the incident he noticed a black, newer-model vehicle that could have been a Nissan, Acura or Mazda suddenly fleeing the scene. Investigators don't yet know if the vehicle was connected to the gunman who was fatally shot.

No identities have yet been released.

This developing news story will be updated throughout the morning.
