Woman Allegedly Takes N.C. Cruiser on Joy Ride

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police arrested a woman charged with taking the cruiser on a four-mile ride.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say they have arrested a woman who stole a police car and took it for a four-mile ride Monday evening.

Kacie Leandia Nelson, 27, was in police custody late Monday being questioned about the incident. Police have not said what she will be charged with.

According to a police spokesperson, several officers were responding to a call at Idlewild Road and Idlebrooke Drive in east Charlotte.

One of the officers responding left his car running, said police spokeswoman Officer Jessica Lawrence.

Nelson got in the car, Lawrence said, "really for no rhyme or reason."

She drove it about 4.5 miles, to 9010 East Independence Boulevard, parked the vehicle and started walking toward Matthews.

Police were able to track the car, and located Nelson shortly afterward. She surrendered and was arrested without incident. Nothing from the car had been taken, Lawrence said.

It was unclear late Monday what, if any, disciplinary action would be taken against the officer assigned to the car.
