A man who attempted to disguise himself as a woman when he robbed a Dalton, Ga., bank Monday, is still on the run.
Police are still trying to identify the man, who led them on a chase after he ran from the downtown Regions Bank and dropped a bag of cash at the door.
The robber was wearing a long dark wig, hat, sunglasses and Georgia Bulldogs sweatpants when he entered the bank and handed tellers a note saying he had a gun.
A teller handed over the cash, but when the man crossed the bank's threshold the dye pack on the cash bag exploded and he and the money were sprayed with red dye, Dalton Police Department spokesman Bruce Frazier said.
Once the man -- described by witnesses as short and black -- ran, a witness told police a man had been seen in the Downtown Motor Inn wearing University of Georgia clothes, Detective Jason Bishop said. Police did find a man in the hotel with UGA clothes, but he was much taller than the robber, Bishop said.
After obtaining a search warrant, detectives checked several rooms at the motel but didn't find the man. At one room at which the key wouldn't work an officer forced entry, breaking the door. Nobody was inside.
Later that day, another witness told police the man was seen running north, or away from the motel, Bishop said. So police said they aren't sure if he was ever at the motel. On Tuesday police followed up with tips and leads and sent evidence to the crime lab.
Police wouldn't say how much cash the robber stole, but Frazier said he likely got away with some of it.
"There's probably a sum of money out there with red dye on it," he said in an email.
