Oct. 17--A Walsh County, N.D., sheriff's deputy charged in last week's break-in at a Crookston gas station resigned Tuesday.
Adam Koenig, 22, Park River, N.D., submitted his resignation Tuesday morning, Sheriff Lauren Wild told the Walsh County Commission.
Commissioners gave Wild permission to hire a replacement for Koenig, who was hired in September.
Koenig was charged with burglary and damage to property after officers found him hiding early Thursday inside a convenience store at the Holiday gas station.
Crookston police said Koenig was wearing his badge on his belt and identified himself as a Walsh County deputy when arrested.
Koenig was released from jail Friday on $500 bail. A pre-trial appearance will be Jan. 14 in Polk County court in Crookston.
Under state law, if Koenig is convicted or pleads guilty or no contest to the charges, he could have his peace officer license suspended or revoked.
Other than a traffic violation, Koenig has no criminal record. He is a 2012 graduate of the University of Minnesota-Crookston, where he studied criminal justice.
