Sept. 26--HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. -- The Maryland State Police Aviation Command recently rescued a seriously injured hiker who fell 40 feet while on a trail in Morgan County.

Medevac helicopters from Frederick, Trooper 3, and Cumberland, Trooper 5, were dispatched Saturday at 1:25 p.m. at the request of emergency reponders who determined that the victim could not be removed safely by ground.

Frederick County Advanced Technical Rescue personnel launched with Trooper 3. Trooper 5 was dispatched as a backup aircraft.

Trooper 3 found the victim in a heavily wooded area. Ground personnel were re-quired to cut open a small area in the tree canopy so that Trooper 3 could lower one tactical member to the hiker, who had been immobilized on a backboard.

Trooper 5 and the ATR team determined that using the aircraft's hoist was the best option for removal of the hiker, who was then transported by air to Winchester Medical Center via Health Net 8, based out of Martinsburg.
