A sheriff's deputy in San Marcos, Calif., struck and killed a pedestrian while pursuing a suspected drunken driver Tuesday, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.
The deputy had just started chasing a vehicle he spotted driving erratically and had not yet activated his emergency lights, when a man "stepped right out in front of him," spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said.
The unnamed pedestrian died at the scene, and paramedics treated the deputy for a minor injury, U-T San Diego reported Tuesday.
Cadlwell said the suspected drunken driver had not been located, the newspaper said.
