Sept. 18--MADISON COUNTY -- Four people were injured in a crash involving an ambulance and a tractor-trailer Monday night on Interstate 55 near Hamel, north of Edwardsville.
The crash happened at about 7:50 p.m. Monday on southbound I-55 in Madison County, the Illinois State Police said.
An Alhambra/Hamel ambulance was responding to a medical emergency at the I-55 rest area at milepost 28. The ambulance was in the right lane when it made a sudden turn to the right, as if to attempt to exit and go up the ramp the wrong way, police say.
A tractor-trailer that was behind the ambulance hit the back of it, causing the ambulance to overturn. Four people were injured: the drivers of the ambulance and the truck, and a passenger in each vehicle.
A police report listed the injuries as "incapacitating" and had no further details Tuesday morning about the severity. All four of the people were taken by Laughlin Ambulance to Anderson Hospital in Maryville.
No charges were issued.
