Sept. 18--PALESTINE -- An Anderson County jailer suffered minor injuries Sunday after allegedly being assaulted by a 27-year-old Palestine woman who had been transported to the facility after being arrested for aggravated assault.

Brittany Lachell Birdow, 27, of Palestine was brought to the Anderson County Jail early Sunday morning after being arrested by Palestine police on an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon warrant, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.

During the book-in process, Birdow was "very combative" and uncooperative with jailers, according to the sheriff.

Around 4:20 a.m. Sunday, Taylor said Birdow was in "the change out room" with a 25-year-old female jailer when she assaulted the woman, hitting her with her fists and also pulling out a wad of her hair.

"She (the jailer) got struck in the forehead and received a couple of lacerations on her forehead and lost quite a bit of hair," Taylor said. "With the help of several other jailers, they were able to get her subdued."

The jailer was treated for her injuries at the jail, according to the sheriff.

Taylor said Birdow was formally charged with the offense of assault on a public servant Monday.

Anderson County sheriff's Capt. Jay Russell is investigating the case.

"It (a jailer) is a dangerous job," Taylor said. "I appreciate what they do back there. It's sometimes a thankless job, but it's an important one."
