Aug. 09--A gunman fatally shot a man before opening fire on Chicago police officers Wednesday night in the South Side's Woodlawn community, authorities said.

Police later arrested the suspected gunman who they believe was also wounded in the exchange with officers.

No officers were wounded in the 11:30 p.m. incident near East 63rd Street and South Martin Luther King Drive, police said.

Grand Crossing District officers arrived to see the gunman firing at a 19-year-old, who was wounded in the back, police said, citing preliminary details. The shooter then opened fire on the officers, prompting them to return fire.

The 19-year-old victim was taken to John H. Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. His identity wasn't immediately released.

The shooting spurred a major police response to the area as officers scoured the area in search of the killer.

Officers eventually arrested a man with a gunshot wound to the leg whom they suspect was injured during the exchange of gunfire, police said.

The man was taken to an area hospital for treatment. No criminal charges had been filed.

This is the second night that Chicago cops happened upon a shooting that led to a shootout.
