Ky. City Borrows $48K to Buy Used Police Cars

During a special-called meeting Tuesday, the Cave City council agreed to borrow an additional $48,000 to cover the purchase of four police cruisers.

July 06--CAVE CITY -- With still $45,000 left to pay on a loan the Cave City City Council took out to help pay down its debt, the city council voted earlier this week to borrow more money.

The city borrowed $80,000 in 2010 to help ease its financial crisis. During a special-called meeting Tuesday, the city council agreed to borrow an additional $48,000 to cover the purchase of four police cruisers.

"It was really the only thing we could do," said Councilman Gary Hogan, who chairs the city council's budget and finance committee.

The city council agreed to purchase the cruisers to replace four cars that are "virtually worn out" and have high mileage. The average mileage of the four to be replaced is about 160,000 miles.

"We've already spent this year something like $18,000 on that whole fleet," Hogan said.

At first the city council attempted to borrow money through the Kentucky League of Cities.

"They only want to see loans in excess of $100,000, so they recommended we get this money at a local bank," Hogan said.

The newly purchased cruisers are 2009 Ford Crown Victorias. The city bought the cruisers from Sullivan Auto Group in Upton. They were previously used by the Williamsburg Police Department in eastern Kentucky.
