July 04--ST. LOUIS COUNTY -- Police say a woman was shot and fatally wounded this morning while being driven to Christian Hospital Northeast by an Alton police officer.
She was identified as Stephanie Hicks, 20, of the 700 block of Linden Street in Alton.
St. Louis County police spokesman Rick Eckhard said the shooting happened at 9:05 a.m. at Highway 367 and Dunn Road. He said the woman was taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, where she died.
Alton Police Chief David Hayes said someone called police about a woman walking on the Clark Bridge over the Mississippi River. An officer was dispatched.
Hayes said the woman told the officer she was going to Christian Hospital Northeast, which is located at 11133 Dunn Road in north St. Louis County.
The officer was driving her to the hospital when there was a struggle over the officer's firearm and the woman was shot, the chief said.
Hayes said he could not provide any more details as St. Louis county detectives were investigating the shooting.
Hayes said the officer is a 13-year veteran of the Alton department.
