A Virginia State Police officer and a driver he had just pulled over were hit by another car on Interstate 64 west of North King Street early Wednesday and were taken to a hospital by ambulance.

State Trooper L. Aviles pulled over a person suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol just before 3 a.m., Sgt. Michelle Anaya said in a news release. About 15 minutes later, the trooper's patrol car, which both were in, was struck in the rear.

The patrol car was hit by a 2006 Ford Mustang driven by Gabriel Martinez of Newport News, who lost control and hit the guard rail and the patrol car at the same time, Anaya said.

The trooper and the suspect, who were not wearing seat belts at the time, were taken to Hampton Sentara Careplex for non-life-threatening injuries.

Martinez, who was not injured, was charged with reckless driving.
