HAYWARD -- Police are investigating events leading up to the burning of a transient man, who thus far has been unable to explain the situation, police said.

About 6:20 p.m. Thursday evening, police arrived outside Caravan Restaurant on Mission Street to find a 48-year-old transient man with fresh, severe burns to his hair, face and shoulders, Lt. Roger Keener said.

According to Keener, the man was extremely intoxicated and only responded to inquiries about how he acquired the burns by saying somebody threw a newspaper at him. Authorities determined the man was too intoxicated to contribute any information, and the investigation was put on hold through the weekend, Keener said. The man will be questioned again once his intoxication level is significantly lower.

The man was transported to an unknown burn unit in Santa Clara and is expected to survive, Keener said. No witnesses have come forward in the incident, and there are no suspects in the case.
