Florida Police Dog Survives Box-Cutter Attack

June 30--A police dog for the Melbourne Police Department survived a box-cutter attack and subdued an aggravated assault suspect early Saturday.

Jose Fernando Cortez, 35, tried to stab DiOGi the police dog with box cutter and, when that failed because the blade broke, he attempted to choke the dog, the Melbourne Police Department said.

DiOGi was not hurt and Cortez was taken into custody. The attack happened at about 1 a.m. in the 1100 Block of Mathers Street.

"DiOGi's efforts in apprehending the suspect prevented the officers from having to physically engage this armed suspect," the Melbourne Police Department said in a statement. No other details were released.
