June 19--A West Reading man was arrested after Reading police said he broke the nose of a police officer who was breaking up an argument between the man and two women.

Carlos Rivera, 30, of the 200 block of South Third Street was committed to Berks County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail following arraignment Sunday before District Judge Ann L. Young in Reading Central Court.

Rivera was charged with aggravated and simple assault and harassment.

Police gave this account:

Officer Brett A. Sneeringer saw several people arguing on the sidewalk in the first block of South Ninth Street Sunday about 2:45 a.m.

Sneeringer was between Rivera and the women as he talked to Rivera. One of the women said something and Rivera rushed toward them. Sneeringer pushed Rivera back, and Rivera's elbow struck Sneering in the nose.

Sneeringer forced Rivera to the ground and took him into custody. A security guard at a nearby building helped Sneeringer.

Sneeringer was treated in Reading Hospital for a broken nose.
