June 13--A South Florida trucker is dead after being hit by a Jacksonville police officer responding to an accident call Wednesday morning.

Shortly after 10 a.m. Alain L. Martin, 33, of Hialeah stepped from behind his trailer on the north side of Eastport Road when he was hit by Officer Charles Reagor, 48, of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Reagor had his emergency lights on and was eastbound from the nearby intersection with Main Street, said Highway Patrol Capt. Keith Gaston.

It was not clear if the police car's siren was on. Reagor was responding to an accident with injuries when he hit Martin across from a convenience store.

Gaston said he doesn't think either the officer or truck driver saw one another until the last second because it happened so fast.

He said Reagor took evasive action but was unable to miss Martin before crashing into a fence.

Reagor, who's been with the Sheriff's Office for 23 years, was wearing a seat belt and not harmed. Martin was taken to Shands Jacksonville hospital and died about 12:40 p.m., according to the Highway Patrol.
