Tenn. Man Charged in Scuffle With Injured Officer
June 09--Police on Friday arrested a 28-year-old man after he allegedly fled from and then scuffled with a police officer who had stopped the man's car and noted the odor of marijuana.
Knoxville Police Department Officer Clay Madison sustained a knee injury during the 9:12 a.m. incident at Arbor Place Apartments, 300 Hall of Fame Drive, according to KPD Lt. Bryan J. Malone.
An ambulance took Madison from the scene to the University of Tennessee to be treated at the emergency room, Malone said.
Madison stopped a blue 1990 Chevrolet Caprice at the publicly subsidized apartment complex. He found the driver, Devin L. Jamison, 1921 Laurens Ave., had no driver's license, Malone said.
"Madison could smell marijuana emanating from the car," Malone said.
Jamison tried to flee, prompting a chase that included stops at least three times as Madison struggled with Jamison while trying to place him in custody.
Officers responding to Madison's foot chase that he broadcast on his police radio apprehended Jamison in the complex.
Malone said officers charged Jamison with violation of the drug-free school zone law, driving on a suspended license, evading arrest, resisting arrest, aggravated assault and possession of drug paraphernalia. He faces a June 19 arraignment, according to Knox County Sheriff's Office records.
