June 09--A Saline County sheriff's deputy followed a Pontiac Sunfire with an industrial-sized spool of copper wire on top into the Salina Municipal Golf Course early Friday and saw the vehicle's occupants take off running.
Retrieved was an estimated $4,700 worth of copper wire -- 3,000 feet of it on top of the car and more on smaller spools inside the vehicle -- stolen from Great Plains Manufacturing, 1525 E. North, said Lt. Scott Siemsen, criminal investigation commander with the Salina Police Department.
Siemsen said a forklift was required to remove the spool of wire from on top of the car.
The deputy had been driving west on Crawford Street when he encountered the 2000 red car driving east at 4:06 a.m., Siemsen said.
No arrests have been made and the theft remains under investigation, Siemsen said.
