A Price man has been sentenced to serve up to 30 years in prison for firing at police and injuring a Carbon County sheriff's deputy.
Gary Hinkins, 41, pleaded guilty to five second-degree felony counts of attempted murder in March as part of a plea agreement, which dismissed two other felony counts.
This week Hinkins was sentenced in Price's 7th District Court in Price to one to 15 years in prison on each of the five counts. Judge Douglas B. Thomas ordered Hinkins to serve each sentence consecutively but they are not to exceed 30 years, court documents state.
The sentence also is to run concurrent to a 2010 case of attempted aggravated assault and possession of a dangerous weapon in which Hinkins received a suspended sentence of up to two years and six months, according to court documents.
On February 2011, deputies and probation officers went looking for Hinkins after his estranged wife was admitted to Castleview Hospital and said Hinkins had beaten her.
Police surrounded Hinkins, who had locked himself inside an RV near his home. They ordered him to get out of the RV and he began firing a shotgun at least seven times through the walls and windshield, striking deputy Michael Hreinson in the leg and torso. The officer was treated and released shortly after the shootout.
During the standoff, Hinkins ran from the RV and was captured in a neighbor's yard.
