May 30--A Dane County Sheriff's deputy narrowly escaped injury by jumping over a median wall when his squad was struck by another vehicle during a traffic stop, authorities said.
The crash was reported shortly after 11:30 p.m. Monday on the left shoulder of the eastbound lanes of State Highway 12/18, near South Towne Drive in Monona, according to the Dane County Sheriff's Office.
The deputy had just gotten out of his squad and was walking toward the vehicle he stopped in the far left lane. Other eastbound vehicles were slowing down and moving over, but a driver who did not see vehicles ahead of her slowing down veered to the far right lane to avoid striking them.
She then overcorrected and swerved onto the far left side of the highway, striking the median wall and the deputy's squad, the sheriff's office said. The deputy could hear the out-of-control vehicle approaching from behind and jumped over the median wall to avoid getting struck.
The deputy was not injured, but the woman driving the striking vehicle and one of her passengers were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, the sheriff's office said. The crash remained under investigation Tuesday.
